My Choices For All is a US Government-sponsored healthcare project inspired from a research pilot tool. It’s a contraceptive methods decision-aid website specifically designed for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) individuals.

I am the design lead and researcher on a 3-person design team, with responsibilities that included collaborating with the clinical evidence team and development team to build a website from scratch.

🥊

Challenge
1. Translate medical information into understandable and engaging content for the public. 2. Address TGNC users’ privacy concerns by designing an inclusive yet identity-protective experience. 3. Strengthen the website’s overall credibility and professional tone as a healthcare resource.

Heuristic Evaluate the Pilot Tool
As a new team, the whole team need get the idea of what this tool is about and initial a plan to get things going. Heuristic evaluation is a great start for us.
We Figure People Have Different Decision Paths
People always have different motivation to visit the website and thus have various decision path. We concluded them into 3 different kinds of paths: Leaner, Answer Seeker, and Hesitator.

🧱 1st Iteration

A Site Map with New Features
We came out a new new site map with new features to address different needs. New features including explore methods, questionnaire and comparison, along with other smaller features such as questionnaire report, myth session, review, FAQ etc, to enrich the functionality of the whole website.
TGNC Individuals Are Very Sensitive About Privacy
From the pilot study, we found that TGNC individuals take careful of their privacy and would like to stay anonymous online. We don’t want the tool to expose their identity while using the site, nor collect any data form them.
Low Fidelity Wireframes
After aligning on the features and sitemap, the three designers each created wireframes for different pages, then came together to review and refine the results.

3 Questions We Needed To Be Answered For the 1st Iteration.

Q1

How are the new features?
Do they make sense? How are the flows? Does it fulfill visitors’ goals? Is it easy to use?

Q2

What kinds of UI works for our target users?
How to be inclusive to TGNC and representative enough without backfire (e.g., rainbow capitalism)

Conducted A Comprehensive Study For Our Questions
We recruited 5 participants and tested ths prototype with a well-designed research plan, including a usability test session and post test questions. Given the early phase of design, we aimed to ask high-level questions to test our ideas.

Yes!
  1. Participants are happy they can find info by different ways.
  2. To recommend the tool to a friend scored 8.2 (on scale of 10)

Neh…
  1. For the comparison table, participants only paid attention to those columns with descriptions.
  2. No one clicked on the Questionnaire Report

  3. Homepage CTA are repetitive with nav bar

Visual Elements Are Intertwined
The relationship between inclusivity, visuals elements, and trust is highly complex and shaped by the interplay of multiple elements. Thus, understanding the motivations behind participants' choices is crucial.
Icons (method icons)
Participants were attentive to how icons represented contraceptive methods. They wanted to see if the icons can reflect how they look in real world. Realistic photos were not necessary, but icons could not be overly simplified, such as plain black-and-white sketches.
Images
Participants preferred photographs that incorporated rainbow patterns, as these were perceived as the most direct and affirming form of community representation.
Color
Perspectives on inclusivity were divided, and no single color was universally identified as inclusive. However, LGBTQ participants appeared to be highly familiar with the color compositions of flags (e.g., the transgender flag or rainbow flag), and specific combinations of colors could serve as meaningful heuristic cues.
Fonts
Participants did not directly associate fonts with gender inclusivity. For them, font inclusivity mainly meant readability.

Visual Does Play A Role. And There're Also Other Factors
Overall, inclusivity and reliability have a positive correlation, but note that some options received very closed scores. We still have to interpret them with participants’ reasoning. Having authority partners is an another effective way to increase credibility.

Implementing Visual Research Results to Design
After study 1, we've gathered much valuable data of how I can leverage visual to the website. I am working on making the barebones to a visual-appealing website. At the same time, makeing sure the website works well across all devices.
Enrich Pages Content by Working With Other Teams
  1. Enrich the content for the team and partners to increase credibility.
  2. Apart from design, participants also brought up questions and concerns and expectations for medical information.

My First Time Cooperating with Medical Professionals!
Most members of this project came from healthcare field. I naturally became a type of “medical information translator.” I had to turn complex concepts into clear and accessible language that made sense to me and therefore to our users. This process was unexpectedly fun and eye-opening.

Being A Design Lead
I led two junior designers, and this experience taught me the importance of trusting my teammates, delegating tasks, and not trying to handle everything on my own. A team will always accomplish more than any individual. I also learned how to act as a design educator by helping everyone maintain a consistent level of design knowledge and vocabulary.

Balance Pace Between Academic Research and Digital Development
Building a website while writing an academic paper was a unique challenge. This project spans more than 3 years, and most of the timeline is dedicated to writing, analysis, and research. As a result, development moves very slowly. I struggled with the slow pace at first, but eventually I learned to adjust and adopt the mindset of a researcher.
