My Choice For All is a US government sponsored project. We realized there were currently no online contraceptive resources specifically designed for the Transgender and Gender Non Conforming (TGNC) community. So, we set out to build a safe and inclusive platform that empowers them to make informed choices.
As the design lead and researcher, my main responsibility was collaborating closely with clinical professionals and developers to build this website from the ground up.

The Problem

Rigid Architecture and Usability Barriers

The pilot tool was a strict questionnaire that ignored diverse user contexts and lacked inclusive design principles.

We faced major user experience roadblocks. The initial pilot tool was basically just a rigid questionnaire. It completely ignored the diverse real world scenarios and contexts that transgender patients actually experience. Additionally, the overall interface lacked an inclusive design strategy, creating unnecessary friction for the exact users we were trying to empower.

Too many texts.

No explanation for methods.

Only supported linear path.

The Solution

Flexible UX Architecture and Rebranding

Restructured the rigid questionnaire into a scalable platform that supports diverse user contexts.

I shifted our focus entirely to interaction design and information architecture. I completely overhauled the flow, expanding the rigid questionnaire into a flexible product framework. This new architecture actually supports multiple user journeys and scales for diverse user needs. To bring this inclusive design strategy to life, I built high fidelity prototypes ready for real world interactions.

The Validation

Usability Tests and Interviews

Combined usability tests to validate the new architecture with in depth interviews to uncover what visual design feels truly inclusive.

We did not want to just guess what worked. We ran a mix of usability tests and deep user interviews with our target audience. The usability sessions allowed us to validate the new flexible architecture and catch any navigation friction. And the interviews help us dig deep into their thoughts to understand what kind of visual styles actually feel safe and welcoming for the TGNC community. Listening to them directly ensured our design choices were rooted in empathy and real needs.

Usability test to validate.

User interview on visual elements.

The Result

Users Found the New Structure Useful and Easy To Understand

Almost all the users found the new site easy to navigate and highlight the 3 main features can cope with different needs.

After confirming the new structure was great, we then continued the visual branding work and prioritized development tasks.

Retrospection

Being A Design Lead and Cooperating with Medical Professionals

the hardest part was not just the UX. Internally, the cross-team communicaiton were sometimes misaligned. Acting as the bridge to translate clinical needs into technical constraints was my biggest takeaway. I learned how to use rapid prototypes to streamline communication, reduce iteration misalignments, and ultimately get everyone on the exact same page

Balance Pace Between Academic Research and Digital Development

Building a website while writing an academic paper was a unique challenge. This project spans more than 3 years, and most of the timeline is dedicated to writing, analysis, and research. As a result, development moves very slowly. I struggled with the slow pace at first, but eventually I learned to adjust and adopt the mindset of a researcher.
